AIFW PREVIEW | PALLAVI MOHAN

Pallavi Mohan drew her inspiration from the view inside a Kaleidoscope, a toy she loved to play with as a child

Leave it to a designer to take inspiration from the simplest of things and weave an exquisite story. In this AIFW Spring/Summer 2016 collection, designer Pallavi Mohan of the ‘Not So Serious’ label has taken inspiration from a Kaleidoscope, a toy she loved to play with as a child. Each time we view inside a kaleidoscope, we see those tiny crystals, forming and deforming to create new shapes.

We sat down with the designer to talk about how she used those complex shapes to weave her design story. “We took a lot of photographs from the kaleidoscope and digitally printed them, but it did not have the same feel of what we wanted,” explained the designer. Moving away from digital prints, Pallavi has experimented with patchwork, weaving and sequinned embroidery on her prét-a-porter pieces this season.

The collection uses a lot of organza and sheer fabrics blended with a not-so-serious fabric – denim with pops of colors. That’s what builds the label, serious quality haute couture with pop elements of fun. Each garment has been beautifully handcrafted and reflects the sheer brilliance of the designer.
