F/W 16 TREND | GRAPHIC BLACK & WHITE

Fashion

Bold and graphic black and white is the season’s ‘it’ trend | Valentino agrees | We tell you how to wear the trend

Art Deco-inspired graphic monochrome is leading the march of trends for Fall/Winter 2015. We analyze the black and white world of international runways.

Emilio Pucci | Their F/W 2015 collection pays homage to Emilio Pucci’s 1950s collection with Peter Dundas reprising it in swirling patterns and monochrome sequins. Almost all dresses are full sleeved with most hedonistically paired with thigh-high boots, also in monochrome. B/W psychedelia, zig-zagging/vertical stripes, and plaid made a heavy duty statement.

Chanel | Lagerfeld gave the audience a warm dose of monochrome with wool, tweed and padded, puffed-up jackets that seemed to bring out the masculinity of his petite models. Lady suits with biker-head mentality were rough, elegant and unexpected.

Lanvin | CD Alber Elbaz infused his Moroccan-ness in the collection. Juggling gracefully with both straight and uber feminine silhouettes, Alber did not shy away from tassels either. The monochrome effect worked well in both its minimalism and abundance.

Valentino | Rich patterns and tailored opulence were aplenty in the Valentino showcase for A/W 2015-16 at the Paris Fashion Week. From simple horizontal and vertical lines to intricate patterns on lace and sheer, Valentino’s collection at PFW 2015-16 was a complete knockout.

The best thing about graphic monochrome is that even a dash of color is enough to lift the simplest outfit | A red Lipper, a solid color handbag or footwear are among a few things

Monochromes on Indian turf | Are we finally ready to open our hearts and closet doors for graphic monochromes  A few Indian designers can help you decide

Rajesh Pratap Singh | Models, playing sexy nurses, showcased a clean, firm yet fashionably accessible collection with its dose of skirts, overcoats, leather jackets, sheath dresses, leather gloves, brogues and oxfords in ikat prints.

Poonam Bhagat | Her collection Taika featured some interesting numbers in black and white, which can become your A/W afternoon pals for all the right reasons.

Abraham & Thakore | Whether salwar pants or cigarette pants, the designer duo displayed a strong sense of ethnicity in their monochrome collections. Checks, ikat and solid black and white added subtle sophistication.

How to wear monochromatic prints | Is it as easy as it looks | We ask an expert  According to international blogger Nicola Michaelides who runs a blog titled, Privileged Views suggests, “The best way to do graphics monochrome is to stick to one print and ideally on a dress. If it is two pieces, then one item should be a print and the other one a block color to balance the outfit and focus the attention on the graphic design.”

A monochrome graphics outfit is about two things-print and base. It pays to invest in a piece that handles the print and the base as two distinguished yet seamless entities. “Mixing different materials and textures is also a great trick to make a big impact on your outfit, whatever color you choose. It is one of the easiest and stylish ‘trends’ or styles that one can wear and have fun dressing with, so what might seem like a ‘mistake’ to one person, can be something creative and innovative to another.” says Nicola.

The best thing about graphic monochrome is that even a dash of color is enough to lift the simplest outfit. A red Lipper, a solid color handbag or footwear are among a few things that will help you work up your monochrome magic.
