UNLEASH THE FRINGE POWER

Fashion

Designers have decided to hark back to the fringe, adding drama to their collections | Rock that fringe, but remember, less is more!

From Alberta Ferretti to Amal Clooney, everyone is rocking fringes this season. The trend is slowly shimmying its way into our wardrobes, reprised from the roaring 20s, plucked from bohemian rhapsody and stripped from cowboys’ booties. The S/S 2015 runways were whizzing with fringes, from Proenza Schouler’s swooshing skirts and Etro’s rope ankle-strap sandals to Dolce & Gabbana floral fringe ponchos.

This season, designers have reinvented the decades-old trend, perking up prét-a-portér pieces with the dramatic embellishment. But, before you go on a dicing and slashing spree in your closet, just recall our first and foremost style rule-Less is always more. If you don’t want to look like Cher’s long-lost sister, here are a few tips to incorporate the fringe into your wardrobe

A GRUNGE VIBE | Always pick a statement fringe piece (a fringe top or jacket) in your ensemble. Pair it up with classics like a white shirt or your basic blue denim. Designer Shweta Kapur from 431-88 says, “Go ahead and experiment. Keep a grunge vibe going with track pants or a basic skater skirt. Accessorise with bags and sunglasses that are embellished with fringes.”

Start small with a fringed clutch or accents on those stilettos

ACCESSORISE | Pair your fringe trims with tailored silhouettes to offset the rodeo effect. Our tip: Go for a pencil skirt with a fringed hem. The designer advises, “Don’t do everything in one go. Either accessorize or keep a separate in sync with the season’s trend.”

START SMALL | If you are overwhelmed by the swish factor, start with a fringed clutch or accents on those stilettos. Shweta says, “Add the accents to your sunglasses or wear Coachella-inspired fringe bags.”

MUTED DRAMA | Never underestimate the power of a tassel. You can go for tasseled earrings or a single tassel on your bag or brogues to create a dramatic effect.

The designer showcased a wild range of fringes in her A/W 2016 collection at AIFW. “This Autumn Winter season, we have used a lot of fringe work as details that highlight our garments or make them more fun. Our AW15 sweatshirt with a detachable leather fringe patch is perfect for the season,” she recommends.

Now, don’t go sewing gold streamers all over your dress. No, Kim Kardashian, that’s not how it’s done!
