HOW TO DESIGN THE QUINTESSENTIAL FAMILY ROOM

My Home

5 ways to upgrade the space in your home that’s dedicated to quality time with family.

A family room is where we gather to spend time with near and dear ones. Often filled with love, laughter and happiness, it’s the the soul of the house. Whether it’s watching a movie together, celebrating a birthday party with aunts, uncles and cousins or simply sharing a cup of tea – the family room should be designed to accommodate all occasions. Here are a few ways you can enhance its look and feel

Play with colours | Keeping in mind the colours that complement and contrast one another, use a mix of cool and warm tones in the family room. For example, you could paint the ceiling in light blue and the walls in even lighter powder-blue. You could then add furnishings and decor pieces in warm tones of yellow and orange, in a variety of patterns and prints.

Let the natural light in | Don’t cover your windows in dark, opaque curtains or place furniture in front of them. Allow natural light to fill up the room by using lightweight sheer curtains. Along with that, introduce neutral-toned furnishings in the room that make the room appear bigger, more spacious, and brighter than it does with dark furnishings.

Display family memorabilia | A family room should be a place that helps reminisce old times. From wall photos of family members and milestone events like graduations, weddings and the birth of a grandchild to souvenirs from family trips and handmade paintings by a family member – keep them all here. Make this room the place where you cherish time spent with your family, whether it’s time gone by or yet to come.

Place a tree wall-mural | Instead of having a family tree inside a scrapbook, create one on a focal wall in the family room. Find and paste a family tree wall-mural on one of the walls and then put a family member’s photograph on each of the branches using some adhesive. Start with the oldest members on the topmost branches and sequentially work your way down, placing the current generation on the branches one above the lowermost ones. Leave the lowermost branches empty for photographs of the next generation.

Add poufs and cushions | Apart from the cozy sofa set, throw in a few floor cushions and poufs as portable seating for additional comfort . They are easy to move around depending on their use and lend a relaxed, casual vibe to the room.
