Design director Mandeep Nagi, Shades of India, shares tips on embracing minimalism this festive season
Is minimalism your everyday style mantra and the overkill on bling in the festive season getting to you? Don’t lose yourself amid the bling and instead, bring in some minimalism into your festive wardrobe. The new rules for minimal festive dressing are luxe fabrics, a subtle color palette and subdued embellishments. As Vivienne Westwood rightfully said, ‘Buy less and choose well’.
We talked to Mandeep Nagi, Design Director, Shades of India, whose understated approach to design caters to your modest wardrobe whims. Their festive collection Borte is all about minimalism with a touch of royalty. Here are the key points to remember while going for a minimal look
Minimalism calls for a black, white and grey combination. However, you can dress up neutral colors with rich-toned separates. Mandeep recommends, “An elegant black kurta styled with jewel-colored scarves or dupattas and bottoms.” You can also play with tone-on-tone layering like wearing a black mul kurta and fitted pants, teamed with a golden tussar dupatta.
Go for easy, oversized silhouettes and stay away from body-hugging details. On her look for the season, Mandeep says, “Silky, free-flowing and a combination of Indian embroideries with contemporary textures is what I prefer.” You can always play with different proportions when layering like wearing flared ankle length pants with a double-layered kurta.

This is the time to play down the festive shimmer and play up your accessories. Mandeep says that all you need is a hint of metal in your look, “A metallic pouch or potli, with a rich dupatta, and gold/silver footwear.” You can also experiment with subtle surface textures in contrasting colors. Their festive collection is a melange of luxe weaves like shimmering silks, matka silks and also velvets. With free-flowing shapes and delicately embroidered necklines and sleeve hems, this will be a perfect pick for your festive wardrobe.
For your home too! If you want to bring a subtle bling to your homes as well, Mandeep proposes, “A table runner, bling or metallic cushions and napkins with decorative ties are our three picks for the season.”
