HOW TO | YOUR PINK YOUR STYLE

My Style

Be it champagne pink, baby pink, fuchsia or even piggy pink, there’s a shade for every woman| Find yours

Pink is beautiful. The only trouble is, pink is known by a cluster of names, which are lavender, fuchsia and champagne, to name a few. These shades in their varying degrees of pinkness make all the difference in terms of their relationship to our skin color and eventually our personality. To put things in perspective, think of a baby pink gown on say, Jennifer Aniston. It might not (sorry, Rachael!) look as beautiful on her as it will on someone like Dakota Johnson. A fuchsia dress, however, will sparkle on both. Two different pinks causing two different stories.

“Pink is really strong right now. I feel like it’s all over the place,” says stylist Mel Ottenberg, who dressed up his client pop singer Rihanna in a Giambattista Valli’s bubble-gum hued dress for this year’s Grammy. Needless to say, it pays to know your fuchsia from lavender pink and your baby pink from hot pink.

Hot pink | Think hot pink when you see the most shocking pink hanging gaily from a branch of your neighbourhood bougainvillea. It makes the wearer feel confident and sexy and looks best on really fair dames.
Best Bet: A hot pink scarf over a pristine white ensemble.

Rihanna’s stylist Mel Ottenberg believes pink is really strong right now. Need we say more?

Champagne pink | The popular Valentine bubbly is a shade of pink that will leave you ‘hung over’ it. Perfect for the summertime cocktail bonanzas where its incandescent appeal is accentuated in dresses, shirts and trousers. Looks good on dark-hued complexions.
Best Bet: A champagne pink-colored cocktail dress brings in delightful freshness.

Piggy pink | It’s the color of piglets. A loud and long “awww” should suffice. Perfect if you are fair and tired of wearing darker colors.
Best Bet: Makes for great bottoms, especially in summers.

Baby pink | It’s the soft pink that looks oh-so-cute on little baby girls. It’s among the perfect colors as it passes on its youth and freshness to the wearer easily.
Best Bet: Go for ’em bangles in baby pink.

Cherry blossom pink | The color gets its name after the famous cherry blossom flowers that are mostly white tinged with the palest pink. Think brunches, picnics or any relaxed summer evening and cherry pink will add certain cheer to your (wheatish) complexion.

Best Bet: A breezy dress, top or hot pants look great in cherry pink

Orchid pink | It shares a close resemblance to fuchsia, the marked difference being in the intensity of purple in the two, making fuchsia darker than orchid pink thus rendering it perfect for those blessed with a darker complexion.
Best Bet: Perfect hue for a relaxed footwear or a patterned bandana when lounging about.

Fuchsia | It gets its name after the flower of the fu chsia plant, which is noted for its mix of pink and vivid purple. A tad bit darker than the rest, it’ll be your ideal partner for a glamorous night out. Looks equally great on a brown and white complexion.
Best Bet: Fuchsia-hued floral pants make a bold fashion statement as do heavy bracelets and nail color in fuchsia.

Light pink | That’s my favourite kind of pink as it’s lighter than hot pink and darker than cherry blossom pink, making it just the right kind of pink for all times of the day.
Best Bet: Looks great on all kinds of accessories

Rose pink | Perhaps a shade that needs no introduction. Inspired and named after the ethereal pink rose, it’s versatile in appeal.
Best Bet: Looks great on lips and is equally charming as an arm candy like a clutch or tote.

Lavender pink | Named after the pinkish variety of the otherwise violet lavender flower; it’s dreamy and misty in appeal.
Best Bet: Chunky earrings/finger ring in lavender pink look stunning.

Silver pink | It’s a shade of pink with a hint of silver, a wonderful concoction indeed for celebrating a glamorous night.
Best Bet: A silver pink sequin dress is a sure head-turner.
