The pants of choice to kick up a notch from standard jeans originated in India! It’s the Khakis (also known as chinos) invented in the 19th century through a mix of Hindi and Urdu words. Its fashion highpoint came when well-established designers like Dsquared2, Martin Margiela, among others, put in on the runway. Embraced by fashion experts and leading magazines, including Vogue and Elle, Khakis have become synonymous with urban cool. Today, more and more variations are spotted on the runways; check out the summer spring 2015 collection of Marc Jacobs. And brands like Gap, Mango and Zara have them in varying colours and styles every summer and this year, the military khaki trend is all over the place.

It is no longer something to wear for a polo match with your riding boots, although that’s very chic or run errands in, paired with loafers. They have a subtle cool edginess (try a pair rolled up with a plain white tee), and rocker chic (simply add your favourite leather jacket to the look). Fold or wear them straight. Dress up with a straight fitted shirt and ballet flats, or simply slip the white tee for a more casual look.
