FESTIVE STYLE WITH DESIGNERS

Fashion

This festive season, we asked Ogaan to pick three designers, who offer easy, wearable separates with a traditional twist

We asked Ogaan India, to give us their top 3 picks for the festive season. The brand suggests Payal Khandwala, Jayanti Reddy and Swati Vijaivargie as the go-to festive-wear designers. “They are very wearable and well-priced. A mix of comfort and style, and great for card parties as they are Indian, but with a modern twist,” they suggest. Here’s why

Payal Khandwala | Why you need it | The Benaras weaves are having a moment this season (have a look at the recent AIFW ‘Born in Benaras’ show), and the designer’s festive collection creates a perfect balance between contemporary and traditional. As the designer explains, “I tried to keep the silhouettes simple, fuss-free and incorporated modern tailoring with pleats and details that complimented the artisanal quality of the textiles. This way the shapes are not predictable even though the textiles are rooted quite firmly in tradition. Also, the idea was to give these handwoven fabrics a modern context so where one expects to see a brocade blouse you get brocade culottes, or a skirt or a waistcoat instead.”
How to style it | Either go for color-blocked separates in rich tones (for the night) or go for smart basics, like a crisp white shirt with blue culottes or (for the day), or beige cigarette pants with a red crop top.

Swati Vijaivargie | Why you need it | If you are a sustainable fashion enthusiast, Swati’s collection will give a boost to the eco-goddess within you. The textiles of this collection have been developed using textile waste with techniques like appliqué, patchwork, and shibori. The result is a riot of colors with multicolored chevron striped maxi dress, emerald green draped pants and duster jackets in handwoven silks, chanderi and khadi.

How to style it | Designer Swati’s collection is heavy on colors and texture, hence you will want to tone it down with solid colored separates. Instead of going for black and white, team up with a single color from the prints (either blue or orange), or you can experiment with print on print.

Jayanti Reddy | Why you need it | The Hyderabad-based designer’s festive collection draws heavy influences from traditional Indian wear. A red flared Anarkali, a red cape top, and a yellow lehenga are the top three picks from the designer’s label. The bright hues with minimal embroidered details make it a perfect pick this festive season.

How to style it | Styling a traditional outfit can be intimidating for a newbie. The style rule is to balance an embellished top with a solid bottom and vice-versa. Don’t deck up from head-toe in accessories, let your outfit do the talking. You can also experiment with monochromatic looks. They are available as easy wearable separates and you can easily layer them up. As they explain, “They mostly come as separates, and hence can be teamed up with a lot of basics one already owns. A lot of mix and match and layering is also another way to style oneself with their collection.”
