IKAT IS FOREVER

Fashion

An iconic textile, Ikat has been adopted everywhere, from the international runway to home-grown labels and home furnishings

A zig-zag weave, which we are all too familiar with, ikat has an authentic glamour and inherent vintage charm that transcends all trends. From traditional wear to bikinis, sarongs, and accessories, ikat has indeed come a long way from being only a black-white bleeding dye technique.

Ikat is on the global map too | from high street fashion to home-grown labels. International designers like Missoni and Etro have refined ikat to emerge as an iconic textile. Peter Dundas for Emilio Pucci (Pre-fall 2014) took the iconic Pucci prints and morphed them with dramatic ikat, in azure blues and reds. Isabel Marant’s prét-a-portér collection (F/W 2016) featured an amalgamation of nautical stripes and ethnic ikats. Altuzarra’s resort-wear collection (Resort 2016) showcased colorful ikat prints with contrasting panels on skirts and maxi dresses.

Styling Tips | The traditional weave can be transformed in a great way to bring a tribal twist to your contemporary style. Designer Nandita Raipurani of Hemant & Nandita label gives us her tips on how you can bring this textile in your wardrobe

While pulling off the in-vogue ikat print effortlessly, the basic thumb rule of ‘balancing more with less’ comes to rescue. Pair a simple and plain, monochrome bottom with a top that is in a busy ikat print and vice versa

An ikat-printed shirt should be a mainstay in every closet. Also, for rookies, I would say, give ikat a chance in your wardrobe with accessories like a scarf or a bag or even chappals. An ikat scarf teamed with everyday plain, boring work-wear packs quite a punch.

If you are a newbie to the concept, ikat can be a bit overwhelming. Designer Nandita says, “To translate ikat print into a minimalist and effortless style, the size of the motif/pattern and its placement is a key factor. Work out outfits in beige, ivory, white that have bright, small ikat prints/patterns on the hemline or on the sleeves.”

Also look no further than the traditional Indian nine-yards for your wardrobe. As designer Vinita recommends, “An ikat silk saree is a must for any closet. An ikat stole will be an advantage as it can be teamed with lots of clothes.” A great way to bring a piece of heritage in your wardrobe. What do you think?
