Runway Alert | Cargo Pant Making The Rounds

Fashion

And one more time, prepare to welcome ugly pants to your closet

Just when we thought ugly fashion had slowly faded away from the talks, we have cargo pants as a debutant to bring the contrary on Ugly fashion’s zeitgeist, to put a face, do we remember Crocs & Balenciaga’s collaboration for that matter? Had quite a strange oomph to it!

With years of namesake ugly pant trend, wide-legged, sailor-pants and the cult favourite ultra-high waist pants have made to the list. Now ‘Cargo pant’, the most anticipated trend of SS19 is leaping for this coming year and we are sure not in a dim view of it. Although there is nothing conventionally pretty about a khaki pant with bulging pockets all over – but madcap is where the charm lies. As children, a ubiquitous reason our mommies dressed us up in cargo pants for a long flight was their functionality – lots of pockets to tuck away the passport, hankies, clips and even a packet or two of nuts; and their comfort – roomy enough to sleep through the flight in ease. But, mere talk of utility is a far cry for the options we have in ‘not so ugly’ cargo pants.

Here’s our edit of this ubiquitously popular pant to warm welcome your shop list of the season from fall to spring:

Fall 2018 had pushed the trend with Ralph Lauren’s collection showcasing the very originals, stuck to the same sensibility of baggy and sporty, functional cargo pants as we recognise them.

Spring 2018 had plenty of sartorial food to feed on for our ugly fashion’s kick-start. Sies Marjan’s Spring collection has a set tone for the deal as they bid a good-bye to fantasy-driven lineups and pioneer the reality-based utilitarian silhouettes. Seems cargo pants have risen from the grounds of camouflage prints as we see a promising palette.

Prabal Gurung has changed the perspective of an awful cargo pant with the clear sign that the trend not only will stay for fall-winter but well into next spring too as he puts his heart in a neon presentation of the collection, he abandoned the ethic and made the pant tightly hug the hip and leg, would you mind if we give some credits to Bella Hadid too for convincing us even better?

Jonathan Simkhai makes us feel Hampton-ready in whites from New York Fashion Week SS19. The designer termed the collection as “escapism” and “rebirth”. Could not have explained any better for Cargo pants!

Taking the creativity ahead, the debutant Claudia Li at SS19 added a tiny hint of traditional, old-fashioned femininity to the gender fluid piece by tailoring cargo skirts in vivid hues.

Philip Lim’s kept the cargo pant look snuggly in all its means, loose and languid. With his bohemian references - idea depicts eternal summer on the bottom.

The trend calls for a companion from old times, the chunky hiking boot, while its rather offbeat fitted cousin would get along perfectly well with loafers, ballet flats, pumps and even strappy sandals. A contrasting look with an uber-feminine pastel blouse, a reminiscence of athleisure with a lounge vest, youthful chicness with a knitted crop top, or a full-on symbolism of gender-neutrality with a loose unisex cardigan.

Statement-making or looking for a more streamlined pair? The cargo pant is your mouthpiece to tell the world that you are beyond conventional ideas of what’s pretty, refined and agreeable. Be game for it ladies!
