SS16 TREND ALERT | DRESS OVER PANTS

Fashion

From New York to Paris, wearing a dress over pants is a reigning trend in 2016

Pairing a dress over your pants might seem a bit too adventurous but is, currently, the hottest trend of SS 2016. Teaming these two separates together could seem intimidating but, if done with attention to detail, can add a distinctive character to your look. International runways, replete with this trend, give us ample cues on how to experiment with this trend.

At the New York Fashion Week, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy presented a romantic ensemble consisting of lingerie dresses paired with trousers. Asymmetric lace layering over well-constructed trousers stood out. In London, designer Simone Rocha, sticking to her British roots, presented a series of demure, voluminous frocks. The collection has some structured dresses with panels on the shoulders paired with trousers, which gave the entire collection a sporty feel.

In Paris, fashion’s polymath Karl Lagerfeld gave same serious lessons on how to do Parisian chic via layering. For Chanel, he showcased some interesting gypsy dresses and translucent shirt dresses over flared trousers. At Loewe it was all a game of textures. JW Anderson gave us some classic cocktail looks with heavily sequined slit tops styled with neatly tailored trousers. Stella McCartney cut some clean silhouettes by pairing a waistcoat dress with flared trousers in black and white.

Missoni’s Angela Missoni got inspired by the 80s pop culture and paired sheer tops over slouchy trousers and converse. It seemed quite a luxurious take on ‘sportswear meets loungewear’. Marni showcased some dramatic dresses with asymmetric hemlines paired with wide-legged, pleated trousers. In Mumbai, Payal Khandwala for her Summer Resort 2016 paired some high slit floor length tops with trousers and flats, keeping it suave and cool.

OUR VERDICT | Take some inspiration from designers, celebs and street-style stars who are having fun with this trend. Try a corset dress with trousers like Kate Bosworth, after her Golden Globes appearance, or sport a black, high-slit top with blue wide-legged trousers like Kendall Jenner. For an instant elegant appeal, try pairing a grey high-low dress with crisp grey trousers like the Instagram It girl Nicole Warne.
