WOULD YOU WEAR A SKIRT OVER YOUR TROUSERS?

Fashion

Such is pre-fall 2019’s hottest trend – take a peep into it

India’s ubiquitous silhouette of layering a midi-length dress (aka kurta) with a pair of trousers will go global in 2019 when the year’s pre-fall collections hit the stores. Numerous pre-fall 2019 runway shows had models parading in skirts (or dresses or long tunics) over trousers, in a way that was conservative and quirky both at once. Whether it be for keeping warm, for a feminist ideal of utilitarian clothing, for occasion-appropriate modesty or simply for following fashion’s new ‘cool’, open your mind to this bottoms layering trend – the following photographs should help you get a perspective on how to make it rock.

Roksanda: A touch of oriental mysticism | With silk kaftans, long ponchos, capes and big-big dresses, all worn over trousers, Roksanda demonstrates how the peculiar sounding combination can flatter to the hilt. Complete the new fashion couple with a pair of ankle boots, throw in some chunky accessories and you can conquer the world.

Philip Lim: An assortment of cool ways to layer | Philip Lim has made the trousers ultra-wide – making the ensemble even more reminiscent of the kurta-palazzo outfits Indian fashion has been brimming with over the last few years. Then the classic skirt-blouse worn in a not-so-classic way over plaid floor-grazing pants is a striking look – do take note of the chic necklace and earrings as well.

Proenza Schouler: Playing it up with leather | Here is introducing some sensuality into modesty with captivating leather pieces. The middle picture with a plunge neck leather dress and roomy grey pants might as well be our favourite look from the curation. Also, leather overcoats lend a sleekness to balance out the slouch in the trousers.

Mixing modesty with sleepleisure | We’re glad these designers have shown us a rather modest way to wear sleepleisure and get those lace-trims unhesitatingly out of the bedroom. Sleepwear inspired slip dresses and wide-legged trousers complete one another like yin and yang, and make for a nice casual outfit for errands about town or a brunch with the girls.

What are your views on this rage of modesty on the ramp? How would you like to layer your bottoms next autumn?
