CHANEL FALL 2019: A WALK THROUGH THE ALPINE COUNTRYSIDE

Fashion

In hats, big plush tweed coats, Nordic prints, snowballs and mismatched plaids

It’s neutrals and sophistication all the way with spectacular tailoring at Chanel’s Fall 2019, the last collection designed by Karl Lagerfeld. The runway this time was an idyllic countryside in the alps with snow and chalets – a winter resort with cross-generational appeal – and so were the clothes it hosted.

Let’s explore the key looks.

Long tweed coats | These personality-rich overcoats are in every way harmonious with the setting of the show – precisely the kind of outerwear you want to be seen in, in a quaint hill holiday town. If an investment piece is what you seek, the brown and black one on the right is just everything a coat ought to be – the wide sleeves and embroidered edges have our most profuse appreciation.

Wide-leg trousers | Aristocratic sophistication – the impression one conjures on the first glimpse of these trousers paired with elegant hats and coats. Quite a certain indicator that the wide leg trend is here to stay.

Cropped pants under skirts | Distinct enough yet instantly reminiscent of the modest skirt-over-trousers pre-fall 2019 trend we wrote about last season. The look is youthful – and the plaid on plaid layering in soft tweed is pretty soothing to the eye.

Nordic print sweater dresses and skirts | There’s something inherently charming and at the same time comforting about Nordic prints. Besides the motif, we love the feminine silhouettes. With layered necklaces on turtle necks and wide logo belts, the accessorizing is something to get inspired by.

Power capes | A splendid wardrobe addition for the tall and lean, we reckon these capes are going to look fabulous with wide leg trousers. After Burberry showed us a series of women in ties, Chanel’s cravat could be taken for a signboard pointing at androgynous accessories – or may be simply an ode to Karl Lagerfeld’s personal style?

Snowball skirts and dresses | They make you think of the pristine alps, and the clean and bright edelweiss that bloom there. Beautifully feminine and youthful, these all-white ensembles look fit for your formal events in winter.

Which of these looks catches your fancy the most? Do you look forward to styling any particular piece of the collection your way – say a cravat sans the cape – or a white snowball skirt with a blouse in some other colour?
