Summer Lovin’ With These Drop-Dead Gorgeous Juttis

Fashion

It’s time to revisit the long-forgotten yet ever-trusty jutti

Every woman’s wardrobe says a lot about her sense of style. Of course, she’s going to have her staples – that coveted little black dress; that crisp white formal shirt; the perfect pair of denims; that go-to, trusty tan handbag; and a chic pair of stilettoes. However, one accessory that’s conspicuous in its absence is the jutti. Of late, the jutti has seen a surge in popularity, and rightly so. This ethnic Indian footwear item has been around for eons now, but it’s only recently that we’ve started seeing it have its time in the spotlight. Although bereft of slender heels, the jutti brings with it its own appeal – the shape hugs the contours of the feet comfortably and the flat base makes it more convenient to flaunt than sky-high heels that invariably cause discomfort.

Today, thanks to a few brands that are dedicated specifically to championing the humble footwear item, juttis have found themselves on the feet of everyone from your regular college-going student to the who’s who of tinsel town. Even Bollywood’s favourite actors and actresses have regularly been snapped flaunting a pair of these beauties with both Indian and Western outfits. It does help, of course, that three homegrown brands, in particular, have been instrumental in reinventing this humble Indian footwear and assuring that it finds shelf space in the closet of every woman.

Here are the three labels that are handcrafting and modernising the jutti one sequin, bead, and thread at a time.

FIZZY GOBLET
Perhaps the best known and most popular of the lot is Fizzy Goblet, founded by Laksheeta Govil back in 2014. What started out as a website has now quickly transformed into a full-blown retail store at Mumbai’s swanky Palladium Mall – just going to prove how far the jutti has come from its humble beginnings as fixtures on the makeshift doors of street hawkers. Although the brand retails a variety of footwear, from brogues, loafers, and sneakers to slip-ons and juttis, each category has some element of the jutti in it. In essence, they’ve been ‘juttified. A quick scroll through the brand’s Instagram page will instantly put a smile on your face. Dotted with juttis in a dizzying display of colours that range from muted hues to bright, bold shades and alluring designs that are a lovely mix of floral and quirky, Fizzy Goblet’s juttis are covetable to say the least. And the cherry on top? The adorable personalised names for each pair, of course! Some of our favourites include Dream A Little Dream, Pixie Dust, Shadow Dance, and Bulbul’s Song. What’s more, brides-to-be may want to feast their eyes on the brand’s Bridal Shop section on their website, which includes pretty packaged boxes of some of their most divine juttis for both brides and their bridesmaid squads.

NEEDLEDUST
Another frontrunner in the jutti game, Needledust was founded by Shirin Mann Sangha in 2014. Incidentally, the brand was the product of Sangha not wanting to wear heels with her wedding lehnga. With their Indian-inspired motifs, the brand is putting a contemporary spin on the good ol’ jutti in a rather whimsical way. One look at their collection of juttis is enough to leave you spellbound – intricately embroidered designs embellished with shimmering sequins, mirrors, and beads culminate in heirloom-worthy pieces. What’s more, all of Needledust’s creations flaunt the ‘chotta panja’ style, known to make a woman’s feet look delicate and lend the man understated sensual vibe. Pictured all together, Needledust’s juttis are the picture of refined sophistication and unparalleled elegance, an effortless blend of the vintage and the modern; and it is this quality that has cemented the label’s dominance in the Indian market. And one last word of advice: you might want to check out their Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla X Needledust range of exquisite juttis in the brightest hues, with the most sublime adornments. Thank us later!

PASTELS AND POP
As the name suggests, Pastels and Pop caters to a younger demographic, with their funky juttis adorned with fun and youthful designs ensuring that they can be paired with everyday wear. Following a similar trajectory to Needledust, the brand was founded in 2015 by sisters Neha, Akanksha, and Aarti Chhabra, with the latter two deciding to self-design the juttis for their sister Neha for her wedding day. What started as a passion project soon became a lifelong mission to reinvent the traditional North Indian footwear in a modern avatar that would go beyond the ‘festive-and-wedding-footwear-only’ tag long associated with it. Staying true to their moniker, the label’s juttis are bathed in soft, pastel hues, but come with cute adornments that add to their subtle charm. While the brand does retail fancier, heavily-sequinned jutti s that are made for special occasions, the vast majority of their collection is focused on simple, unfussed designs that can be worn daily.
