FIVE NEW WAYS TO WEAR DENIM THIS FALL

My Style

Elevate your denims this season so they’re anything but basic

Denims are an investment piece for your wardrobe. With designers from all over the world reimagining this wardrobe staple season after season, it would be safe to say that denim has found its rightful place in high fashion. This season it is all about the details in a spectacular array of cuts, washes and finishes.

Whether it be Paris label Vetements’ reworked vintage jeans to Gucci’s eclectic embroideries, your denims are in for a major haul this fall season. The time has now come to customize your favourite pair of denims and make it your own with DIY details. We show you five new ways to upgrade your denims, with inspiration from the runways of course:

Two toned

A modern take on the patchwork denim trend, this style is marked by two different washes on the front and back. The style which made its debut at Balenciaga under creative director Demna Gvasalia of Vetements is slowly on the rise. Take cues from Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Miroslava Duma on how to effortlessly style them. Look for an uneven hem (high-low or frayed) for a cool take on the trend.

Bleached What differentiates a high-street denim from a high-fashion piece? When Alessandro Michele for Gucci gives it a couture bleached twist on the runway like he did for Resort 2017. Go for styles that look like they were carefully hand-worked versus machine-produced acid washed jeans. You can even experiment with a fun DIY tie-dye project on an old pair.

Patchwork If two toned and tie-dye lie outside your comfort zone, tap into the customized denim trend more subtly with a pair of patchwork jeans. Look for flared denim and straight or boyfriend cuts – the must-wear shapes right now – covered with as many artfully contrasting panels as you can handle.

Embroidered jacket FW16 is the season of customized denim, so why not get a personalized denim jacket to embody the same? The shapes may be standard (preferably masculine and boxy), yet intricate embroideries and embellishments will set them apart. Like a Sonia Rykiel jacket punctuated with glittering black crystals and playful lip, heart and Eiffel Tower motifs or a Marc Jacobs acid washed jacket appliquéd with eclectic patches. Go ahead and figure out what your denim jacket says about you.

Trench coat Wondering how to style denim for your work wardrobe? We suggest you meet its polished and neatly tailored cousin – the denim coat. Layer it over your elegant separates like a pair of black cropped pants and block heel pumps to make an office-appropriate style statement.
