Summer promises unlimited happiness with the sun, sand, pool-side fun, floral dresses and cool cocktails.

Summer promises unlimited happiness with the sun, sand, pool-side fun, floral dresses and cool cocktails. However, the hot rays of the sun can be harsh for hair, making your mane dry, brittle, limp, lifeless and frizzy. Lovina Gidwani, a specialist in ageless lifestyle deals with these issues daily with her clients. Lovina shares her self-tested chemical-free hair care DIY’s that are easy to follow. So read on and don’t forget to let us know what worked for you.

Cleanse | Keeping the scalp clean of dirt and sweat without using too much shampoo. Restrict shampooing to only twice a week.

DIY | Baking soda works wonders to reduce the oiliness of scalp and hair. For an itchy scalp and dandruff, squeeze a few drops of lemon in yogurt and apply it to the scalp. Leave for 15 minutes. Add a dollop of shampoo to some baking powder and use it to rinse your hair.

Hydrate | A deep conditioning twice a week is a must to restore moisture in dry and brittle hair.

DIY | Lovina says, ‘This is a personal favorite as I have very dry and frizzy hair’. Mash a ripe banana; mix a few drops of extra virgin coconut oil, mix well and apply on scalp and hair evenly from root to tip, let it stay for 15 minutes and wash off with a mild chemical free shampoo.

Protect | Exposure to sunlight isn’t just the enemy of skin, it’s also responsible for dryness and breakage of hair.

DIY | A good natural sunscreen for hair is to add a few drops of Red Raspberry seed oil (proved to have UVA and UVB protection) to Almond oil, as this oil is hydrating and yet not very greasy. Use this on your hair like a serum before heading out.

Avoid | Summer is a great time to go natural and avoid any heat treatments.

DIY | Avoid hair dryers and opt to dry your hair naturally as often as possible. Start by blotting your hair gently with a soft, absorbent towel –apply a few drops of almond oil and wrap it again in a towel till it dries. To create waves in long straight hair, try plaiting your hair after applying almond oil and leave it to dry.

How to style | Leaving your hair down during hot days is definitely uncomfortable. Choose the right styles that don’t damage the hair.

DIY | Tying up in tight knots is avoidable as hair is weak and brittle in summer. Choose loose, easy and breezy styles and also avoid wearing tight clips as it can lead to more hair breakage
