The imminent thrill of spotting a tiger and close encounters with startled jackals make Jim’s Jungle Retreat, an 18-room boutique hotel, a great getaway for a weekend. Located at the edge of the Jim Corbett national park, the retreat’s lodges and cottages are Raj-style and extremely spacious, with balconies overlooking the pools and trees.
The colonial-style rooms are air-conditioned and come with expansive balconies, which can get you quite spooked as darkness falls, as there is enough that goes bump in the night! Carry a lantern if you’re visiting a cottage for a late glass of wine or herbal tea. There is also a spa on the premises, promoting natural ingredients and offering instant pick-me-ups for one’s complexion and tired feet.
During the day, there are enough activities to engage in, but you can give it all a skip and pick up a book from the library, preferably one by Jim Corbett himself, brew some organic tea in the privacy of your cottage and settle down to read. Meal-times are an opportunity to discover the intricacies of Kumaoni cuisine.
In the evenings, there are movie screenings on an outdoor projector, with snacks and drinks being served and the pebbled pathway leading up from the cottages lit up with colored lanterns. While you’re there, don’t miss a tour of the organic garden, which supplies veggies for the kitchen, with the self-taught naturalist and in-house gardener Hiralal.
As night falls, the balconies are the perfect spot for sharing anecdotes about things that go bump in the night. There’s an easy calm and easy to forget the reasons why you have to rush back to the big, bad city.
