S/S 2016 TREND ALERT | RUFFLES & PLEATS

Delicate ruffles and structured pleats were trending on the Spring 2016 runways

Spring is here and we are so ready to refresh and lighten our wardrobes. Romcore has taken over where Normcore left off, and it’s time to bring ladylike, soft tailored silhouettes back in daily wear. The runways of Spring/Summer 2016 featured flamenco ruffles and a distinct Spanish vibe, while accordion pleats reminded us of a garden party in perfect weather. The car-wash pleats have given way to more tightly-pressed, accordion pleats. These are more dimensional, all in all giving a grown-up flirtatious vibe to the outfits.

For those who prefer a roughed up or directional version of this trend, look to Gucci’s animal prints, Carolina Herrera’s Trompe-l’oil pleats, Balmain’s tiered ruffles on mermaid skirts and off-shoulder tops. Louis Vuitton’s neo-Victorian collection adorned ruffles on necklines and sleeve hems and Balenciaga did a minimal play on ruffles.

Our verdict | If you are looking to add voluminous drama to your outfits, then it should be your go-to accents this season. Keep in mind that ruffles are flamboyant and can be streamlined with a contrast, fitted pairing i.e. a pencil skirt or bra-top. A pleated midi skirt should be on your list of must-haves for this season. Wear it with a turtle-neck, short leather jacket or v-neck blouse for an hourglass effect. The key is to tuck it in or add a belt to accentuate your waist.
