LONGING FOR VICTORIAN LUXURY? BOOK YOUR STAY AT LONDON’S TEMPLETON HOUSE

Spaces

Live in an 18th-century house that has been generously restored to its original splendour

What if we tell that you now have a chance to live in a delusion of Georgian grandeur, a 240-year-old mansion which was once the home of Winston Churchill? Yes! you heard us right, after nine years of serious renovation, Templeton House is open for visitors to stay and feel the 18th-century Victorian style luxury. And just like some of the British nobles do, get your personal chef, spa treatment, or simply just take a stroll through the lush imperial garden. Apart from the royal palaces, Templeton House is one of Britain’s grandest stately homes that has been sitting quietly for centuries, and most of us didn’t even know its existence.

Re-live the history

The sprawling 28,000-square-foot property is beautifully nestled in the quiet suburb of southwest London. Its interior has been conceptualised with such expertise that the moment you will enter the grand Doric portico walking up the Portland stone staircase, you will feel re-connected to the history. While in the garden, you’ll see white ducks swimming around the cedar trees – the scene is exactly how it was when Churchill lived here. The house was named after Lady Elizabeth Templeton, an artist and wife of an Irish aristocrat who first settled there in 1786. And If you think you have seen this house in a movie, don’t doubt yourself. It is the house where Downton Abbey was filmed. Now for your spooky spines, the house also served as a hospital during the First and Second World Wars. This architectural beauty indeed has a share in some very interesting history, isn’t it?

The mesmerising interiors

Each architectural detail inside the Templeton house is meticulously done to bring the estate back to life. And while there are eight guestrooms, each one draws fine details into it with each room having its own story to tell. As you’ll enter to the heavenly abode, your eyes will be first drawn to remarkable antique furniture pieces, paintings dating back to 1700, colossal chandeliers, and a baby grand piano. You can notice how subtly, the 400-year-old oak wood flooring is reimagined into Chantilly panels giving a vintage look. As you’ll get into details of the house, more aesthetic elements will get unfolded: marble fireplace, distressed mirrors, colonial-style pastel shades, huge velvet furniture, antiquarian books or old sketches of Prime Minister. In an instant, you’ll realise how the authenticity of the old is artistically blended with new.

And once you get past that, you can give yourself a luxurious pampering at the palatial spa, one of the most modern spaces in the house. Also for the water babies, at Templeton's basement level is a magnificent 82-foot indoor pool. Templeton House is priced between INR 15,10,000 to INR 25,00,000 per week and can accommodate up to 16 people. Well, who wouldn’t want to experience such opulence, sipping the favourite wine, and soaking in the beauty?
