Dressing to the Winter Wedding Cocktail

My Style

A selection of western formal dresses from Fall 2018 to wear to pre-wedding cocktails

Thank God for pre-wedding bashes – we get the chance to dress up differently for each party preceding the wedding day – and planning it all is no less exciting than actually being in the event. Let us tell you today what you can wear to the quintessential cocktail party or that gown-bow tie type engagement ceremony – basically, the event you wear a fabulous formal western dress to. All our picks are from Fall 2018 collections, so you can instantly pick the pieces you like and wear them to the slew of winter weddings ahead.

Get at least one tiered dress in your closet | A covetable combination of formal, youthful, vintage and romantic – that’s a tiered dress for you. The selections above from Rodarte and Marchesa take the joy of dressing to the hilt. You can accessorize these frocks with vintage hair accessories or keep things subtle with minimal jewelry like a pair of drop earrings and  a bracelet – in any case, we’d say, let go of the necklace. And yes, pastels are quite in this winter!

Wear a coat over your gown | For those late evening outdoor parties where all your small talk revolves around the oh-so-cold weather while your teeth chatter to oblivion, take delight in this smart styling by Erdem. A beautiful coat won’t take away from the charm of your gown; it will add to it. Put on an ornate belt over it to define the waist and you’ll be the star of the party – for two reasons – looking smashing and being comfortably graceful!

Get creative with separates | A formal party doesn’t always have to mean a gown or tea-length dress; while these make for safe choices, you can get a lot more creative than that. Invest in a nice set of separates including skirts, trousers, jackets and blouses, and mix-match them to create your own looks.

Seek out dark floralsFloral prints on a dark base, which have been ubiquitous on the Fall 2018 ramp, look like a perfect match for the Indian pre-wedding celebrations. We love these two strapless floral gowns from Marchesa – they’d look lovely with curly open hair, scarlet lips and bare-minimum accessories.

Shine in metallics | Another Fall 2018 favourite, this sheeny-shiny trend will work perfectly with Indian wedding atmospherics. Do make sure that you don’t go over-the-top with metal – pair a metallic piece with something matte and subtle like a classic white blouse. Wear a pair of fishnet stockings for the je ne sais quoi.

A special treat for mamas-to-be | There is no dearth of spellbinding formal dresses for pregnant women, and Kirsten Dunst, in her photo shoot with Rodarte shows us how to get it right. Flaunt your bump and the gorgeous natural glow of motherhood in a beautiful empire-line gown, or Dunst’s coat with a stunning big bow.

A happy, fashion-rich wedding season to you!
